Automatic for the People: Rossling and Co. quartz and self-winding watches

There’s something nice about holding a watch in your hand before you purchase it, but more and more the best watches at the best prices are by ecommerce brands. Unless you want to go seriously high end, that’s the way to go. Check out a kick starter video or get a deal from a company which has already had some funded projects.

Case in point: Rossling and Co., an online-only brand founded in Canada by three watch-loving brothers. The company has completed four successful Kickstarter campaigns, one for a quartz ($99-$139) and three for automatic styles. The last collection, the Metropolitan automatic, raised over $100,000 at $349 or $379 a pop.

rose-gold-mesh-black_largeThat’s a fair price for an attractive self-winding timepiece with a Japanese-made Calibre 9015 movement, visible through an open case back and optional open heart on the dial. Though not as thin as some of Rossling’s earlier designs, the Metropolitan still has a sleekness thanks to its rounded glass and croc-style strap. Only 399 watches were produced for each of the six models in the series (two black, two blue, two white).

Now, Rossling is pre-selling its next collection of quartz timepieces through a crowdfunding page on its own website. Featuring 20 watches named after exclusive West London neighborhoods (we dig the Kensington), the collection has offerings for men and women. All come with a Swiss-made quartz movement and are only available online.

We’ve only seen the photos and videos, but they look pretty good. At $99 a pop, they look great.
