Why do we celebrate 4:20?

420 origins
What are the origins of 420?

Why do we celebrate 4:20- the history of time as a code.

It’s no secret that the time 4:20 and date April 20th (4/20) are a code for an entire subculture of cannabis smokers in North America. But where did this time code come from and why is it such a staple in the cannabis culture?

The 4:20 time code phenomena all started in San Rafael, California in 1971. A group of teenagers (who called themselves the Waldos) wanted to create a code that would allow them to talk about smoking cannabis in front of their parents and teachers. Thus 4:20 was created. They would meet after school at 4:20 at the Louis Pasteur statue at their school. This time code then was picked up by the band “The Grateful Dead” and spread through their followers (Deadheads). 4:20 was then featured on the Hemp 100 in High Times and it spread like wild fire. Since then 4:20 has gone from a simple time code between friends to an entire subculture following.

Many stoners today utter the words 4:20 everyday. The date 4/20 has become a widespread counterculture holiday, and is celebrated by many. But few realize that the time code was meant for waiting until 4:20 pm to start smoking (meaning no wake & bakes). Members of “The Waldos” did an article with High Times ( you can read it here), and explained the entire start of the time code as well as the difference between being stoner smart and stoner stupid.

Whether they consider you to be stoner smart or stoner stupid, whether you wake & bake or wait till 4:20 pm, you’re included in the subculture. Show subtle hints at the best time of day while staying completely classy at the same time with this cool 4:20 watch.

The origin of the term 420, celebrated around the world by pot smokers every April 20, has long been obscured by the clouded memories of the folks who made it a phenomenon.
